The dramatic economic and political changes in post socialist societies have
been well documented in academic and media sources. Perhaps oddly, however, the
crucial aspects of management change, organizational transformation and employee
relations have often been omitted. We know little about how former state owned
enterprises have attempted to re-orient themselves towards 'free' markets and
how managers and employees have dealt with this new era. This conference aims to
address this problem by providing an open environment in which all areas of
economic transformation after state socialism can be discussed in a
area-focused, multi-disciplinary fashion.
Papers are invited on all aspects of work and employment, industrial relations,
and management transformations in China, the former Soviet Union, Eastern Europe
and other former socialist countries. Contributions towards theoretical
development will also be encouraged. Keynote speakers will address the future of
management research into post socialist societies.
Accepted papers will be allocated one of the following streams:
- Transforming Ownership and Management Structures
- Organizational Forms and Inter-organizational Relationships
- Labor Market Changes and Reforming Enterprise Welfare
- Industrial and Labor Relations
- The Realities of Work
- Gender and Work
- Informal or 'Shadow' Economy
- Theorizing Post socialist Management
There will also be a doctoral stream, and papers from PhD students are
especially welcome.

Relations between Internal, Continental and Transatlantic Migration in the 19th
and at the Beginning of the 20th Century
Institut für Geschichte, Universität Salzburg
12.-13.12.2003
The goal of the intended workshop is to intensify the discussion of new
perspectives in migration history by focussing on migration patterns in Central
Europe. For years within migration research, the diverse fields of overseas
migration, internal migration, and continental immigration were studied in
isolation from one another. Therefore, this workshop will focus on the linkage
and the mutual influence of various types of regional mobility during the
nineteenth century and in the first half of the twentieth century.

Theme:
The fundamental contrast between convergent and divergent tendencies in the
development of Balkan cultural/linguistic identity is an important determinative
in the contradictory self-image of people in the Balkans, as well as in the
biased perceptions of Balkan societies held by external observers. In bringing
together heterogeneous disciplines and lines of research, this conference aims
at elucidating the intriguing paradox which characterises the cultural situation
in the Balkans and which, moreover, is of undeniable relevance for our
understanding of recent political developments.
