Announcement follows:
General information :
This internship program, sponsored by the German Bundestag and the Rheinische
Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Bonn offers qualified, politically-interested
college graduates from Central and Eastern Europe the opportunity to get to know
Germany's parliamentary system. Participating countries are: Bulgaria, Czech
Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Romania, Russia, the
Republic of Slovakia.
After a general introduction provided by the University of Bonn, participants
are given a broad view of political life in the Federal Republic of Germany in
seminars held by foundations affiliated with the Parliamentary groups
represented in the Bundestag. Afterwards, participants complete four months of
practical training in offices of Members of Parliament. The goal here is to
offer an intensive, real-life impression of how parliament works and how
political issues are handled. Within the framework of full-time hours,
participants get acquainted with the work in an MP´s office - the emphasis here
is on learning by doing! This includes, for example, preparing for parliamentary
sessions, evaluating information, preparing petitions, writing speeches,
articles and letters, etc. Visits to the legislator's home district are also
planned.
Parallel to the trainee period, an accompanying university seminar provides
participants with the theoretical foundation they need in their work. During the
winter semester participants are enrolled as regular students and are welcome to
take advantage of the university's wide range of courses. Beyond academic
aspects, the program offers excursions to Berlin, Germany's new eastern states,
and to Brussels, as well as many other activities so that participants can get
an up-close look at German and European politics.
Scholarships :
Participants are awarded 900 DM per month in scholarships from German Bundestag
funds. In addition, university and insurance costs are covered, and free
accommodations are provided in various university dormitories. Participants must
pay for their own transportation to and from Bonn.
