Subject Details : The Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research (PIK) was
founded in 1992. Its mission is to develop and establish a new scientific field
which could be described as Earth System Analysis (ESA) . A profound
understanding of natural and socio-economic processes and their interactions is
needed to describe the dynamics of global change, such as climate change and
changes in human land use, based on ESA methods. Methods and concepts of various
traditional scientific disciplines have to be integrated under the umbrella of
ESA to improve the quality and evidence of scientific knowledge about the
dynamics of the complex Earth system. In addition to this basic research an
aspect of applied science is involved. The results should be relevant to
providing advise for policy makers with respect to measures to avoid the causes,
mitigate the effects, and to adapt to the unavoidable consequences of global
change. It is PIK's role to research into the conditions of a `co-evolution' of
mankind and nature. The enhancement of the greenhouse effect, the extinction of
species, large-scale overexploitation of natural resources and increasing
desertification are all visible signs that the natural balance of our planet has
reached the limits of its stress-bearing capacity. These symptoms are heralds of
a 'Global Change' afflicting the Earth System as a whole and hence the humanity
as well. PIK is organised along the lines of specialist departments: Climate
Research, Global Change & Natural Systems, Global Change & Social Systems,
Integrated Systems Analysis and Data & Computation. The institute takes account
of the interdisciplinary character of climate impact research, particularly the
interface between the natural sciences and socio-economic dimensions of
environmental research, through a project-orientated research programme cutting
across the departmental structure.

Title : Heatwave 2003: Impact and Adaptation
Type Details : There has been intense interest in this summer's heatwave
across Europe. The heatwave was the result of a very persistent high pressure
field over Central Europe causing several weeks of high temperatures and low
precipitation. The impacts are cross-sectional including, for instance,
declining crop yields, increased incidence of death, shifts in tourist
destinations, increased forest fires, increased water and enery usage. Further
secondary damages, e.g. in forests, are expected. However, to assess impacts and
provide adaptation and mitigation measures and integrated analysis is necessary.
In addition the extremeness of this summer allows toanalyse the summer in the
light of climate change (proxy for 2050) .
Thus HEATWAVE aims to (i) collating qualitative and quantitative data from
suceptible sectors allowing an (ii) in-depth analysis of the summer 2003 and
relating results to long-term observations. It is the goal to analyse the
distribution across Europe of meteorological characteristics, document man
impacts, assess variation in the degree of vulnerability, describe adaptation
and measures. This goals shall be approaches via an comparative and integrated
assessment for several regions of Europe.

Title : TROJAN HORSE: R&D of a product and INDUSTRIAL CONVERSION of SME's of
furniture sector
Type Details : The target of the project is to transform production processes
in furniture industry through technology and thus help SMEs of furniture
production increase their competitiveness, provide solutions for faster
adaptability to market needs and serve emerging and niche markets, like
installations for people with specific needs, in particular equipment for Third
Age People and their living environments.
SMEs of the furniture sector producing goods for public spaces have many needs
and specific competitive - problems. To overcome them, TROJAN HORESE will
develop
SUSTAINABLE DESIGN APPLIED TO NEW EMERGING MARKETS: develop new product concepts
and lines of furniture for THIRD AGE PEOPLE directed to geriatric facilities and
adapted houses.
INDUSTRIAL CONVERSION BASED ON ECOLOGY CRITERIA, to achieve sustainable
enterprise structure: sustainability (environmental, economical and social
sustainability) . The production model of the company shall be transformed to
match production of the new line of furniture with the current manufacturing
process.
The proposal for the TROJAN HORSE sets out to integrate the principles of
sustainability in the design, planning and manufacturing process of a new
product lline: furniture adapted to the people of the third age.
The change supposes an opportunity for the conversion of SMEs in a model of
sustainable industries. In this way, companies can offer new products and
services to an emerging and growing market and at the same time they can respond
to ecological challenges in production and contribute to the fulfilment of the
directives of European Union and the conclusion of the summits of Rio and
Johannesburg.
